What are the 7 powers of wrath ?


In the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, the seven powers of wrath are introduced as obstacles to spiritual growth and ascension. While they are not explicitly described as seven demons, a parallel can be drawn with the story in Luke 8:2, where Mary Magdalene is said to have had seven demons cast out of her. This connection invites us to view these demons not as literal entities, but as metaphors for the egoic powers that affect everyone to varying degrees. Like gatekeepers, these powers reflect the inner struggles and layers of identity the ego clings to, separating us from the truth of our soul..

These powers were later transformed by the church into the seven deadly sins (although in Mary's gospel, Jesus states that there is no such thing as sin). Author and theologian Meggan Watterson reinterprets them as the seven powers of the ego.


These 7 powers hinder our spiritual growth and prevent us from accepting ourselves as both fully human and fully divine. The ego mistakenly thinks it’s the SELF, but it’s merely a collection of identity layers separating us from the truth . The truth lies in the soul beneath these egoic desires.

    This power involves wanting reality to be different from what it is, causing suffering. By letting go of attachments, we align with our soul's true desires.


  • Ignorance
    Ignorance is a profound lack of awareness, blinding us to the impact of our words and actions. The ego believes it is the SELF, but it’s just layers of identity.


  • Excess/Gluttony
    Excess is an unconscious compulsion leading to self-sabotage. All forms of addiction and imbalance fall here, numbing us and disrupting our harmony.


  • Forgetting - Enslavement to the Physical Body
    This shadow emerges when we identify solely with the body, neglecting our soul. It’s about balancing physical desires with our spiritual journey.


  • The Body - False Peace of Flesh/Sloth
    This shadow reflects fear of our own humanity, vulnerability, and mortality, causing distrust in our body and missing our soul’s guidance.
